Art, Memory, and Connection Across Three Spaces
In Alkoven, Upper Austria, Institut Hartheim brings together creative expression, daily life, and remembrance in a rare and resonant way. As a center supporting adults with intellectual and multiple disabilities, Hartheim integrates art directly into the rhythm of community life - where making, reflection, and care meet.
At the heart of its creative work is the Neuhauserstadl Atelier, a studio where artists pursue painting, sculpture, and performance guided by their own ideas and curiosities. The focus is not therapeutic outcome but authentic artistic expression - each work seen as a record of experience and encounter.
Hartheim’s setting carries profound historical meaning. During World War II, Schloss Hartheim was one of six sites used in the Nazi “Aktion T4” program. Today, the institute’s artistic life transforms that legacy: art becomes a living act of remembrance, an affirmation of dignity and creative presence on ground once marked by loss.
Through its KULTURFORMEN network, Hartheim extends this practice beyond its walls into the public sphere:
Galerie Lebenswert (Hartheim) - Situated beside Café Lebenswert and the memorial site, this permanent exhibition invites visitors to encounter selected works from Hartheim’s collection in a space of reflection and daily life.
Galerie KULTURFORMEN (Linz) - Opened in 2015, this gallery in the center of Linz presents rotating exhibitions by artists with disabilities from Hartheim and beyond. It acts as a civic platform - pairing art with dialogue, visibility, and exchange.
Together, these spaces form a connected ecosystem of creativity: the Neuhauserstadl as the source, Galerie Lebenswert as a contemplative anchor, and Galerie KULTURFORMEN as a bridge to the wider world. Each affirms that art within support settings is not separate from culture - t is culture.
